How To Sample Music In Logic Pro X10

Description: In this exercise, you will follow steps to practice the concepts we just learned.
By the end of this activity you should know how to: 1) Open a Project, 2) Import Loops into a Project, 3) Trim audio regions, 4) Loop audio regions, 5) Split an audio region in a certain place, 6) Delete an audio region 7) Change tempo
1) Open Logic Pro X, and create a new project (File >> New Project).

2) If prompted, click 'Create' to make a track.
3) Open the Loops Library.
4) Click 'All Drums' in the Loops library to just view drum loops.
5) Find the 'Anvil Smash Beat 01' loop (you can use the search bar at the top of the library) and drag it into your project where it says 'Drag Apple Loops Here.' Click 'Import' if prompted.
6) Trim (shorten) the loop to only go one measure (from the '1' in the timeline to '2')
7) Loop the drum sample 8 times (up the '9' on the timeline)
8) Click 'Reset' on the loops library to view all the categories.
9) Click on 'Piano,' and drag the 'Candlelight Piano' sample into the project.
10) Select the piano track region and put the time marker on measure line '5'.
11) Select the 'Edit' menu, then 'Split' >> 'Regions at Playhead.'
12) Split the piano region again at bar line '4'. Delete the middle piece.
13) Set the tempo of the song to be 95 bpm.
14) Show Mr. Reilly your work before moving on Project #1.

Sampling in Logic Pro X is revamped and easier to do than ever before! This tutorial will get you the foundation for sampling like Just Blaze, JUSTICE League, Clams Casino, J Dilla, and Kanye West. These instructions will teach you how to break down a sample, add it to the EXS24 sampler, and get it to a point where you can play the chops with your MIDI Keyboard.

1. Find a song you want to sample and drag and drop it on a new audio track.
2. Select the sections you want to use. Trim the sections into clips using the SPLIT BY PLAYHEAD function.
3. Once you have your sample chops ready, create a new track with the EXS24 sampler.
4. Double click EXS24 to open up the options. Click EDIT in the top right corner.

5. Drag and drop your sample chops to the EXS24 sampler. You want the settings to be 'Zone Width 1 Notes' and 'Contiguous Zones.'
6. Close the EDIT window and save your instrument.

7. You can now play your sample chops with your MIDI keyboard.
8. Adjust the VOICE settings to LEGATO and 1 VOICE if you want your samples to cut each other off when you switch keys.
9. If you're getting any clicks or pops when playing your samples, play with the settings of ENV2 in the bottom right corner. In the demo video, I increased the ATTACK because some chops were popping at the beginning.
10. TUNE your sample by turning the PITCH knob. You can use this function to change the speed of your samples.
